Phonics Worksheet /ʌ/ /uː/
Teaching Notes
This worksheet can be used after Lesson 20.
1 Listen and say.
• Say the following words and allow the children to repeat
them after you: bus, duck and mum.
• Focus on the short u /ʌ/ sound in isolation. Repeat the
sound several times and ask the children to repeat after
you. Then say the three words again with the children
following on their worksheets and repeating after you.
• Write the words on the board and circle the /ʌ/ sound in
each word.
• Repeat with computer, you and blue and the long u /uː/
sound.
4 Write words in the correct boxes.
• Give the children time to fill in each box with corresponding
words from the previous exercises.
• Children can add other words that they find as they
progress through the course.
2 Circle.
• Point to the picture of the bus and ask What’s this?
• Then ask Is it /ʌ/ (short u) or /uː/ (long u)? Once you have
elicited the correct answer (/ʌ/), tell the children to point to
the circled /ʌ/ on their worksheet for the first item.
• Continue as a class, asking the same question for the
other pictures and allowing the children time to circle /ʌ/
or /uː/. When they have finished, check the answers.

as you read out the rhyme again. Then ask which picture
matches the rhyme (picture b). Tell the children to write the
number 1 (for rhyme 1) in the box provided for picture b.
• Ask whether the main sound in the rhyme is /ʌ/or /uː/. It
is /ʌ/. Then ask the children to circle all the /ʌ/ sounds on
their worksheet. Ask How many /ʌ/ sounds are there? (8).
• Read the second rhyme to the class and follow the same
procedure. The main sound in the second rhyme is /uː/.
There are 3 /uː/ sounds.
