The purpose of the subject chosen Nowadays teaching as well as learning English is compulsory for all grades (from the primary school to the university or especially after the university) because it plays an important role in communicating, updating the information or doing researches. School year: 2012 – 2013 Nam Ha High School written by: DUONG LE THANH THUY SOME DIFFERENT WAYS TO CHECK “THE STUDENTS’ MASTERING VOCABULARY IN A READING LESSON” To teachers, how to teach effectively, applicably and attractively? To students, how to learn the lessons by heart fast and easily as well as use them correctly? This is always a big question for teachers before each teaching period and for students when studying a foreign language (especially English). Basically, there have been many changes in content and the methods of teaching foreign languages (in general), English (in particular). To be successful in each period, teachers are always creative to make lessons more perfect and more interesting. To help students learn vocabulary effectively and remember them as much as possible is considered not only important but also urgent because vocabulary is known as “a brick” and other language factors “glue” to build “ a language house” In fact, to find out the best solutions to the problems teachers often meet while teaching and studying foreign languages, all groups and departments related to education usually carry out the movements, the contests or the discussions which help teachers have opportunities to learn experiences from each other. Realizing the characteristics of the subject, I have always studied and learnt the best teaching methods to help students improve their vocabulary. With the 13-year teaching experience, I have had an idea and applied it to the fact. That idea is named: SOME DIFFERENT WAYS TO CHECK “THE STUDENTS’ MASTERING VOCABULARY IN A READING LESSON. 4 B. The foundation from the fact: - The role and steps in teaching and studying vocabulary. - The skills in introducing and reinforcing vocabulary. - The result of using those skills. C. Objects and the methods of doing the research: School year: 2012 – 2013 Nam Ha High School written by: DUONG LE THANH THUY SOME DIFFERENT WAYS TO CHECK “THE STUDENTS’ MASTERING VOCABULARY IN A READING LESSON” - Objects: students at Nam Ha high school (class 12C2 – C10 and 11C1 – C2 – C6) - The methods of doing the research: + Read books as well as other documents. + Learn experience from the colleagues. + Do some experiments – make statistics – consider the results. 5 ADVANTAGES School year: 2012 – 2013 Nam Ha High School written by: DUONG LE THANH THUY SOME DIFFERENT WAYS TO CHECK “THE STUDENTS’ MASTERING VOCABULARY IN A READING LESSON” AND DISADVANTAGES 6 A. Advantages: - When realizing the importance of studying foreign languages, many parents have paid more attention to their children’s studying. - More and more students are interested in learning English. - Teachers are always enthusiastic and creative in teaching. School year: 2012 – 2013 Nam Ha High School written by: DUONG LE THANH THUY SOME DIFFERENT WAYS TO CHECK “THE STUDENTS’ MASTERING VOCABULARY IN A READING LESSON” - There are various teaching techniques supporting an English class (computer, screen and flash light…). - The head-staff board always supports and helps teachers during the teaching period. - There are many experienced teachers in the Foreign language group. - Many teachers who are good at the I.T help us design games. B. Disadvantages: - Students’ capacity is much limited and at different levels. Some of them are quite deficient in the base of learning English. - Some students pronounce habitually wrongly and the teachers feel in vain in correction. Moreover, they transcribe English into Vietnamese without using the International Phonetic Alphabet. This wrong study leads to their lack of English knowledge. The teachers must face this problem – A great difficulty in our teaching. - The majority of students have lack of self-confidence in listening to teachers’ explanation in English. - Most students, for the sake of the university entrance examinations, consider some other subjects, such as: maths, physics, chemistry, even biology more important than English. As the result, they learn English with a rather ignorant attitude. - Length of time for a teaching period is relatively short. - In Bien Hoa city, there aren’t many opportunities for students to communicate in English. - Students fail to study properly and do not have enough time to take part in the English speaking clubs. 7 School year: 2012 – 2013 Nam Ha High School written by: DUONG LE THANH THUY SOME DIFFERENT WAYS TO CHECK “THE STUDENTS’ MASTERING VOCABULARY IN A READING LESSON” CONTENT 8 School year: 2012 – 2013 Nam Ha High School written by: DUONG LE THANH THUY SOME DIFFERENT WAYS TO CHECK “THE STUDENTS’ MASTERING VOCABULARY IN A READING LESSON” In order to help students have confidence in communication skills, teachers need to make use of every opportunity to enlarge their vocabulary. Length of time for a teaching period is relatively short, so how can a teacher help his/her students “know” new words and use them properly in context? I think some following ways can help to check how well students master vocabulary they have just learnt. Note: Teachers should choose the suitable games for the different classes with the different grades as well as encourage students to use dictionaries while studying. 1. Matching Preparation: Teacher prepares some devices for the game. (some sheets of paper with new words, Vietnamese meanings and explanations on) Performance: - Teacher divides a class into 2 groups. Teacher chooses 3 members for each group. (one for English meanings, one for Vietnamese meanings and the other for synonyms) - The students have to finish the game with the limited time. If a group finishes the game within the limited time and has the best result, that one will be the winner.
