Umbrellas are used by people all around the world.
The basic umbrella was invented over 4000 years ago.
Umbrellas are seen in ancient art from Greece, Egypt, Assyria
and China.
The first umbrellas were designed for protection from the
sun.
Umbrellas weren't used in Europe until the 18th century.
About 80,000 umbrellas are left on the London Underground
every year.

Yes, of course.

No, than ks.

No, because there was a problem with the water.
We need some sugar for this dessert.
Do we need a lot?
No, just a spoonful of brown sugar.
Look, I got some new plates. Do you like the design?
Yes. I like the little blue flowers in the middle.
Me too. Unfortunately there weren't any cups or bowls
in the same style.

B: Amazing! I love red! And there are so many different kinds
of red there.
A: Where is it?
B: I think it's in Africa, North Africa . Let me see .. . ah yes, it's in
Morocco.
A: What is that stuff? Is it paint?
B: It's dye.
A: Sorry?
B: Dye - d-y-e: for changing the colour of things. Look, there
are some animal skins hanging on the wall. The men are
going to dye them to make coloured leather, for making
bags and shoes.
A: Oh, of course. My mum's got a bag that kind of colour.

B: No. Lots of people asked about tickets, but on the night
very few people came. It was disappointing .
A: What a shame. You spent a lot of time practising, didn't
you?
B: Yes, but we had no time to practise with Leo, our new
violinist. On the positive side, Leo was fantastic. He hasn't
played in public many times, but he was brilliant! A couple
of people from the local newspaper wanted to talk to him
afterwards.

1 - how many friends do you need? 50? I know you're very
sociable!
B: Well, 50 is too many, I think, but I need a lot offriends
because I like doing different things with different people.
Fifteen is a good number, I think.
A: My answer's different. I only need a couple of good friends.
And that includes you, of course!
B: Ha, good! What about Question 2 - sleep? How much sleep
do you need, Alison?
A: About six or seven hours sleep a night.
B: That isn't enough for me! I need a lot of sleep, about
eight hours. I sometimes sleep for nine or ten hours at the
weekend.
A: Ten hours! That's too much!
B: Well, I need it. Question 3 - time alone, but not asleep.
That's not important to me. I don't need much of that.
A: Oh, I need a lot - about two hours a day. I get tired if I'm
with people all the time. Finally, chocolate!
B: You might find it hard to believe, but I actually don't like
chocolate. I don't eat any.
A: Really?

O R1.1
I'd like to tell you about the Art Day which is coming up on the
tenth of June. It's a day for families, so everyone's welcome and that means children, too, of course.
This is a day for people of all levels of experience. Our teachers
will guide the beginners; more experienced artists can work in
groups or by themselves.
You don't need to bring any materials with you. We'll provide
everything that you need. There will be enough paint, brushes,
paper and card and modelling clay for everyone, as well as
some new inks in an exciting range of colours.
The price of the day is just five pounds per person to cover the
cost of the materials.
We suggest that you bring an apron to protect your clothes, or
even better, that you wear some old clothes. You don't want to
get even a drop of ink on something special as these new inks
that we will be showing you are permanent and impossible to
wash out. We also suggest that you bring a couple of bags or
boxes to take your work home in.
We look forward to seeing you on the 10th June. Come along
and enjoy yourselves!
R1.2
A: You look different Toby. Have you done something to
your hair?
B: Well, yes, kind of.
A: Whot do you mean?
B: Angie cut it for me.
A: Oh, right ...
B: What do you think? Is it OK?
A: I'm not sure ... It's not very smart.
B: No? Oh, dear. I need to look smart. I'm going to stay with
my mum's family in France tomorrow. They live somewhere
near Paris, in a small town, Senville or something - I can't
remember exactly. It's on the river Nonette, I do remember
that.
A: I've never heard of it. So, is all your family going?
B: No, I'm flying to Paris by myself, and my aunt's going to
meet me at the airport.
A: Is your aunt French?
B: Yes, she is and she doesn't speak much English, so I'll be
practising my French for the next few days!
A: Wow, what a brilliant opportunity! Nobody in my family
speaks French and I certainly don't know any French
people.
B: I know, I'm very lucky ... But what about my hair? What do
you think I should do?
A: You could go to the hairdresser's and pay for a proper cut.
B: Hmm ... No, I haven't got any money with me now, well,
only a little bit, and there won't be enough time for an
appointment in the morning.
A: Why don't I try and do something to make it look better?
B: I guess that would be better than doing nothing ...

Did you have a good weekend?
Yes, thanks.
Did you do anything special?
No, not really. But I had a long list of things I wanted to do,
and I did most of them.
Like what?
Well, I did all my homework.
Right. Did you speak to Tanya about the History test?
No, I didn't, but I can talk to her tomorrow. What else did I
do? I went swimming. I swam about 60 lengths of the pool.
That's good.
Yes, I was pleased with that.
So, what else was on your list of things to do?
Well, I wanted to buy a present for Cathy, so I went to the
shops. I spent a long time looking at things, but I didn't find
anything, unfortunately. Anyway, I bought some postcards
for my school project and I got some DVDs from the library.
Sounds busy! Did you finish your book?
No, I didn't. I read a bit but I didn't have much time
because Anna phoned and we arranged to play tennis on
both days.
That doesn't sound very relaxing!
No, that's true. It wasn't a relaxing weekend - but it was

Interviewer:
Oscar:
Have you ever been to hospital in a different
country?
Yes, I have. It happened two years ago. I was on
holiday in Germany. I had gone there with my school
for a week.
I was skiing down a hill with my friends when I
crashed and broke my arm. It hurt a lot! My teachers
took me to hospital. The doctors asked me lots of
questions and looked at my arm. Then they x-rayed
it and put it in plaster.
Afterwards I was in a lot of pain, but I was happy
that I hadn't broken my other arm, and I was
pleased that I'd understood the doctors when they
spoke to me!
My arm's been fine since then, and I still want to go
skiing again . In fact I'm making plans for another
skiing holiday next year.

I'm Emily Banning. I'm 79 years old. I used to go to a big
school in the town centre. I can remember it clearly. It was
very different to your school today.
We didn't use to have a school uniform but we all wore smart
clothes. All the boys used to wear ties.
The classes at my school were big . There used to be more than
35 pupils in my class.
We didn't use to sit at big tables. At your school you sit with
your friends, but for us it was one table fo r on e child.
Our classroom was very simple. There didn't use to be a lot
of pictures on the walls and we certainly didn't use to have
computers in the classroom or in th e school.

Hello. My name's Theo Martin, and I'm going to talk to you
today about three of my paintings that are here at the
Skylight Gallery. They're here for six weeks, then they'll be
going to a permanent collection in a gallery in Tokyo, Japan.
I don't usually speak in public, but the owners of the Skylight
Gallery have asked me two or three times to give a short
presentation, so here I am today. And it will be a short
presentation, I promise you! I have no intention of talking to
you for hours and hours about my paintings!
I'll start with this painting, 'Forest Green (One),. I painted it
about two years ago from memory. When I was a boy I used
to love a place called Dean Forest. I hadn't thought about
Dean Forest for years. Then, one day a few years ago, I was
walking in a wood in Canada and vivid memories of Dean
Forest suddenly came back to me. 'As soon as I get back to
my studio I'm going to paint Dean Forest; I thought. And
that's exactly what I did. I didn't use photos. I just painted
my memories onto the paper. I've painted about fifteen other
paintings of Dean Forest, but this one is my favourite.
This next painting is called 'Girl: It's a painting of my daughter
Libby. I did it about 20 years ago, when Libby was six years
old. She was sleeping on the sofa and I decided to paint her.
Ten minutes later she woke up, got off the sofa and left the
room. The moment had gone! But I finished the painting in the
studio. I'd taken lots of photos of Libby, so I had pictures that I
could work from.
Finally, I'll say a few words about this picture, 'Dots and Lines:
I painted this w hen I was at Art School more than 30 years
ago. It stayed in a cupboard for many years, but recently it's
become one of my most famous pieces of work. When it's in
the gallery in Tokyo it will have been in galleries in eighteen
different countries.
I'll tell you some facts about 'Dots and Lines'. It weighs 76kg.
It has 50,000 red dots on it and 100,000 black lines. And I'll tell
you a secret, too - I hate it! But other people like it, it seems.
I don't understand why, but the painting has a life of its own
now, I suppose - and it doesn't need me any more!
