In the researcher’s experience, the 11th grade students at Me Linh high school do not have high competence of English speaking skills. This problem comes from many reasons, one of which is that the teaching method of teachers is not effective. To the best knowledge of the researcher, Kagan cooperative learning structures have been widely applied and highly effective in teaching English in general and English speaking skills in particular. This motivated the researcher to conduct this study in order to answer the following two research questions: How can the use of Kagan cooperative learning structures in teaching English speaking enhance Me Linh 11th grade students’ English speaking skills? What are the students’ opinions of Kagan cooperative learning structures? In order to address these questions, the researcher used an action research, with the employment of a number of different instruments to yield proper results. The research was carried out in a grade 11 class consisting of forty eight students at Me Linh high school. By describing and interpreting the data collected, the researcher justify the effectiveness of using Kagan cooperative learning structures to improve the students’ speaking skills as well as students’ opinions on Kagan cooperative learning structures. Based on the literature review and the findings, the research provided implications for the teaching of English for Vietnamese students in general and students at Me Linh high school in particular.
