CỘNG HÒA XÃ HỘI CHỦ NGHĨA VIỆT NAM Độc lập -Tự do - Hạnh phúc ĐỀ TÀI DẠY HỌC CHỦ ĐỀ DUNG DỊCH BẰNG TIẾNG ANH Ở TRƯỜNG TRUNG HỌC PHỔ THÔNG Quảng Bình, tháng 01 năm 2019 1. SUMMARY 1. What are solutions, solute and solvent ? When you mix sugar with water, the sugar seem to disappear. That is because its particles spread all through the water particles, like this: sugar + water → solution (the separate sugar particles are too small to be seen) The sugar has dissolved in the water, giving a mixture called a solution. Sugar is the solute, and water is the solvent: solute + solvent = solution solution: a homogeneous mixture = A solvent + solute(s) aqueous solution: water is the solvent Water (a polar solvent): dissolves most ionic compounds as well as many molecular compounds The concentration of solutions percent ( by mass )= mass of solute × 100 % mass of solution For example: Ex 1: If 1.00 kg of seawater contains 35 g of sodium chloride, the percent of NaCl in seawater is 35 g ×100 %=3.5 % 1000 g Ex 2: If a solution contains 25g NaCl dissolved in 100 g of water, the mass percent of NaCl in the solution is 25 × 100 %=20 % (100+25) ( A solution that contains 20% (by mass) of NaCl means that for every 100 g of the solution, there will be 20 g of NaCl. Therefore, if seawater contains 3.5% NaCl, for every 100 g of seawater, there are 3.5 g of NaCl.) percent ( by volume )= volume of solute × 100 % volume of solution For example Ex 3: If 750 mL of white wine contains 80 mL of ethanol, the percent of ethanol by volume is 80 mL × 100 %=11 % 750 mL ( A solution that contains 11% ethanol (by volume) means that for every 100 mL of the solution, there will be 11 mL of ethanol in it. However, unlike mass, volume addition is not always additive - meaning that if you add 11 mL of ethanol and 89 mL of water, the total is not 100 mL. In this case, the total volume is slightly larger than 100 mL. Therefore, in many mixtures, percent by volume is only an approximation.) molar concentration ( molarity )= mole of solute liter of solution For example Ex 4: If a solution contains 0.25 mole of NaCl in 440 mL of the solution, the molar concentration of sodium chloride in this solution is 0.25 mole =0.57 M (mol / L) 0.440 L of solution Ex 5: If you dissolve 36.0 g of NaCl in 250 mL of solution, the molar concentration of NaCl will be 36.0 g NaCl× 1 mole NaCl 58.44 g NaCl =2.46 mol / L=2 .46 M 0.250 L 2. What are electrolytes? Water is polar molecule. What happens when ionic compounds are placed in water? Ionic compounds dissolve-form ions (charged particles) = Electrolytes Electrolytes are substances which, when dissolved in water, break up into cations (plus-charged ions) and anions (minus-charged ions). Aqueous solution and electricity: When ions are present in water, the water is able to conduct electricity. The solution is known as electrolyte solution An electrolyte solution is a substance that contains free ions and can conduct electricity Dissociation is a general process in which ionic compounds separate into smaller ions, usually in a reversible manner Dissolution or dissolving is the process where ionic crystals break up into ions in water. A dissociation reaction is a chemical reaction where a compound breaks apart into two or more parts. The general formula for a dissociation reaction follows the form: AB → A + B Dissociation reactions are usually reversible chemical reactions. One way to recognize a dissociation is when there is only one reactant, but multiple products. Dissociation reactions are usually reversible chemical reactions. One way to recognize a dissociation is when there is only one reactant, but multiple products. Dissociation reaction examples When you write a dissociation reaction in which a compound breaks into its component ions, you place charges above the ion symbols and balance the equation for both mass and charge. For example When hydrochloric acid undergo dissociation, it produces hydrogen ion and chloride ion: −¿¿ +¿+Cl(aq ) ¿ HCl → H (aq) While some molecular compounds (like water and acids) form electrolytic solutions, most dissociation reactions involve ionic compounds in water (aqueous solutions). −¿¿ +¿+ Cl(aq) ¿ Na Cl (s) → Na(aq) Fe2 ¿ −¿ ¿ 2+¿+2 Cl(aq) ¿ CuCl 2(s ) → Cu(aq) 3. Classifying Electrolytes Conductivity in aqueous solutions is a measure of the ability of water to conduct an electric current Factors that affect the conductivity of electrolytes (sai ngữ pháp) - The concentration of ions in solution. - The type of substance that dissolves in water: + Strong electrolytes form ions easily + Weak electrolytes do not form ions easily. - Temperature: High temperature = high solubility = high conductivity as well observe whether ammeter shows a reading: Remember that for electricity to flow, there needs to be a movement of charged particles e.g.ions Solid NaCl crystals, there was no flow of electricity Because: Ions (charged particles) held together in the crystal lattice - no current will flow. Distilled water, oil and alcohol: covalent compounds - no ions (no charged particles) - no flow of electricity. Salt solutions and the acid and base solutions was flow of electricity. Electrolyte solutions- salts dissociate into their ions, so that these are free to move in the solution. a. The strong electrolytes The strong electrolytes are substances which, when dissolved in water, break up into cations and anions completely (100%). Ionic compounds dissolve well in water because of water's polar nature. E.g 1. NaCl −¿¿ +¿+ Cl(aq) ¿ Na Cl (s) → Na(aq) Note that the positive side of the water molecule will be attracted to the negative chloride ion Cl- and the negative side of the water molecule to the positive sodium ions Na+ Strong acids and bases ionize completely when dissolved in water. Therefore, strong acids and bases are strong electrolytes Examples of strong electrolytes are given below: strong acids strong bases salts HCl, HBr, HI, HNO3, HClO3, HClO4, H2SO4 NaOH, KOH, LiOH, Ba(OH)2, Ca(OH)2, NaOH, Sr(OH)2 NaCl, KBr, MgCl2, and many, many more Example 2: +¿ ¿ 2−¿ ¿ Na2SO4 is soluble in water, and it dissociates into 2 Na(aq) and SO 4 (aq ) 2−¿¿ +¿+SO 4 (aq) ¿ N a2 S O 4(s ) → 2 Na (aq) b. The weak electrolytes The weak electrolytes are substances which, when dissolved in water, only partially break up into cations and anions (usually on the order of 1–10%). That is, the principal species in solution for strong electrolytes are ions, while the principal specie in solution for weak electrolytes is the un-ionized compound itself Weak acids and bases partially ionize when dissolved in water Therefore, weak acids and bases are weak electrolytes. Examples of weak electrolytes are given below: weak acids weak bases HF, HC2H3O2 (acetic acid), H2CO3 (carbonic acid), H3PO4 (phosphoric acid), and many more NH3 (ammonia), C5H5N (pyridine), and several more, all containing "N" c. Nonelectrolytes Covalent compounds: note: will not form ions E.g. Glucose C6H12O6 (s) → C6H12O6 (aq) If a substance doesn’t ionize in water at all, it’s a non-electrolyte. Examples: Most carbon compounds are non-electrolytes. Fats, sugars, and alcohols are largely non-electrolytes. sugars and carbohydrate fats and lipids Alcohols other carbon compounds C6H12O6 (glucose) Cholesterol C2H5OH (ethyl alcohol) C5H12 (pentane) 4. Acids, bases and salts From the vinegar in your kitchen cabinet to the soap in your shower, acids and bases are everywhere! But what does it mean to say that something is acidic or basic? In order to answer this question, we need to examine some of the theories describing acids and bases. In this article, we will focus on the Arrhenius theory. 4.1. What is an Arrhenius acid? Acids are compounds that produce H+ ions when dissolved in water H+ combines with water to form H3O+ ions in aqueous solution For example, let's consider the dissociation reaction for hydrochloric acid, HCl, in water: −¿¿ +¿+Cl( aq) ¿ HC l(aq) → H (aq) or: −¿ ¿ +¿+Cl(aq) ¿ HC l(aq) + H 2 O(l) → H 3 O(aq ) Basicity of acid It is the number of replaceable hydrogen ions in one molecule of an acid Monobasic acid: One replaceable hydrogen ion per molecule. e.g. HCl, HI, HNO3, etc. HCl ↔ H+ + ClDibasic acid: Two replaceable hydrogen ions per molecule. It dissociates in two steps e.g. H2SO4 H 2 SO 4 ↔ H −¿ ¿ +¿+ HSO 4 ¿ ; H HSO−¿↔ 4 2−¿ ¿ + ¿+ SO4 ¿ ¿ Tribasic acid: Three replaceable hydrogen ions per molecule. It dissociates in three steps e.g. H3PO4 H 3 PO 4 ↔ H +¿+H −¿¿ 2 PO 4 ¿ +¿+HPO H 2 PO −¿ ¿ ↔H HPO2−¿ ↔ H +¿+ PO ¿ 2−¿¿ 4 3−¿¿ 4 ¿ ¿ ¿ ¿ 4.2. What is an Arrhenius base? Bases are compounds that produce OH- ions when dissolved in water. It is any species that increases the concentration of hydroxide ions, OH - in aqueous solution. An example of an Arrhenius base is the highly soluble sodium hydroxide, NaOH. Sodium hydroxide dissociates in water as follows: −¿¿ +¿+OH (aq) ¿ NaOH (aq) → Na(aq) In water, sodium hydroxide fully dissociates to form OH - and Na+ ions, resulting in an increase in the concentration of hydroxide ions. Acidity of base: It is the number of replaceable hydroxyl ions per molecule. Monoacidic base: One replaceable hydroxyl ions per molecule. NaOH → Na+ + OHDiacidic base: Two replaceable hydroxyl ions per molecule. Ca(OH)2 → Ca2+ + 2OHTriacidic base: Three replaceable hydroxyl ions per molecule Al(OH)3 → Al3+ + 3OH4.3. Amphoteric behaviour Basic hydroxide, that can combine with an acid as well as alkali to form salt and water. e.g. Zinc hydroxide Zn(OH)2 ↔ Zn2+ + 2OHH2ZnO2 ↔ 2H+ + ZnO2−¿¿ 2 4.4. Salts? Salt is a compound which when dissociates in water yields positivie ions other than a hydrogen ion and a negative ion other than a hydroxyl ion. e.g. NaCl, NaNO3 , ... −¿¿ NaCl → Na +¿+Cl Na NO 3 → Na ¿ −¿¿ +¿+ NO 3 ¿ 5. Acid- base reactions: Arrhenius acid + Arrhenius base = water + salt In an acid-base or neutralization reaction, an Arrhenius acid and base usually react to form water and salt. Example HCl(aq) + NaOH(aq) → NaCl(aq) + H2O(l) −¿ → Na +¿ +OH −¿+ Na (aq ) ( aq ) ( aq ) +¿+Cl H (aq) − ¿+ H O ¿ 2 (l) +¿ +Cl ¿ ( aq ) ¿ (aq ) ¿ ¿ ¿ +¿+OH Net ionic equation: H (aq) −¿→ H 2 O(l) ¿ (aq ) ¿ Most strong acid- base neutralization reactions share the same net ionic equation: −¿→ H 2 O(l) ¿ +¿+OH (aq) H (aq) ¿ D.
