5. Structure of distribution:
Singapore's distribution and sales channels are simple, direct and open to the
participation of foreign firms established in Singapore. Because of Singapore’s role as a
regional hub, most local distributors will also have knowledge of regional distribution
rules and regulations. Most consumer goods are imported by stocking distributors who
resell to retailers. Some goods are imported directly for sale in the importer's own retail
outlets.
The two leading supermarket chains which dominate the retail market are Dairy Farm
Singapore and NTUC FairPrice. Dairy Farm Store is aimed at customers with medium
and high incomes, while NTUC FairPrice serves the mass. NTUC FairPrice is still
dominant in the retail sector with 32% of the market.
Besides, there are also a number of independent supermarkets like Isetan management,
Meidi-Ya, Mustafa's, and Prime. Supermarket chain (Sheng Siong) opened recently to 33
small and medium shops and Prime with 19 stores, is a family business model. The chain
stores are developed from the small grocery store, with very competitive prices due
mainly goods originating from China and neighboring Asian countries with low costs.
