Foreign language teaching and learning in Vietnam has been undergoing drastic changes, creating the need for training high-quality English as a Foreign Language (EFL) teachers. This mixed-method study investigated the perspectives of students in a teacher education program about characteristics of a good EFL teacher and the construction of their perceptions. Initially, 117 juniors and seniors in Faculty of English Language Teacher Education (FELTE), University of Languages and International Studies (ULIS) were asked to complete a self-report questionnaire. Semi-structured interviews were then conducted to provide explanation for significant quantitative data. The results disclosed that pedagogical skills and content knowledge were the two most important aspects of an EFL teacher as perceived by the participants.
